The infrastructure layer is eating the model layer. Across today's signals, the pattern is unmistakable: whoever controls compute, data routing, and integration into existing workflows now holds more leverage than whoever trained the weights. Nvidia's research showing that fine-tuned agents outperform raw model capability, Salesforce embedding AI coding directly into Slack workflows, and the reported ten-billion-dollar commitment from Anthropic to Volta all point to the same conclusion. The model is becoming a commodity service plugged into proprietary harnesses. Anthropic's Claude models leak sexually explicit content despite stated restrictions, yet Anthropic still commands venture capital and enterprise contracts because the real moat is access to compute and the ability to integrate into customer operations. Meta's AI glasses are generating privacy backlash, but demand keeps accelerating because the hardware and network effects matter more than the model powering them. Even Chinese robotics and orbital data centers are competing not on algorithmic innovation but on infrastructure positioning and cost structure.

This shift is reorganizing where capital and regulatory scrutiny flow. The DOJ investigation into Andreessen Horowitz's board conflicts between Ben Horowitz at Databricks and Martin Casado at Fivetran signals that antitrust attention is moving upstream, toward the infrastructure and integration layer where real market concentration is happening. Starcloud raising 250 million for orbital data centers, Nvidia deepening partnerships with Cloverleaf for terrestrial infrastructure, and Inner Mongolia's emergence as a data center hub show capital chasing scarcity in compute access and energy. The supply-chain attack on Rust packages at build time reveals that as AI coding agents move into shared team workflows through Slack Code, the attack surface shifts from model outputs to the development pipeline itself. Builders who control integration points, not just model parameters, are the ones who will extract durable value.
