The week's dominant signal is the financialization of AI. OpenAI and Anthropic are no longer selling software to enterprises. They are selling themselves to the people who actually move capital. OpenAI extracted $10 billion from a consortium of 19 Wall Street firms. Anthropic closed $1.5 billion from Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, and Hellman & Friedman, then immediately launched a joint venture with those same asset managers to "aggressively market" enterprise AI products. This is not a go-to-market strategy shift. This is a distribution layer replacement. The venture capital model that built these companies has been superseded by private equity, which brings patient capital, institutional sales relationships, and the ability to embed AI into existing portfolios rather than pitch it as a standalone product. Cerebras, the chip vendor, is heading for a blockbuster IPO valued at $26.6 billion or more, riding the same wave. Sierra raised $950 million to become the "global standard" for AI-powered customer experiences. The money is flowing to companies positioned as infrastructure or enterprise tools, not consumer products or research labs.
The second pattern is that actual product performance is diverging sharply from market narrative. Microsoft announced more than 20 million paying Copilot users, up 33 percent from 15 million in January, but the company is not claiming those users are generating outsized productivity gains or revenue. Image AI models now drive app downloads at 6.5 times the rate of chatbot upgrades, yet most of those downloads do not convert to revenue. A Harvard Medical School study published in Science found that AI outperformed doctors in emergency triage at 67 percent accuracy versus 50 percent, but the study itself is already being drowned in citation noise from a retracted ChatGPT education study that was cited hundreds of times before retraction. Anthropic, which bills itself as the most sophisticated evaluation shop in AI, shipped three quality regressions in Claude Code that its own internal evaluations did not catch. The gap between what AI can do and what it actually does for paying customers is widening, not closing. Capital is flowing into the space anyway because the institutional buyers now have skin in the game and incentive to make the bet work.
The third pattern is that nobody is asking hard questions about the business model because the power structure has already shifted. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and cofounder, revealed in federal court that he holds a $30 billion stake in the company, a fact that reframes the entire lawsuit between Musk and Altman as a dispute over who gets to cash out and on what terms. The trial itself is being used as a platform to air grievances rather than settle facts. Stuart Russell, Musk's expert witness, is a researcher who believes governments need to restrain frontier labs, which means Musk is paying for testimony that contradicts his own business interests in an AI arms race. The Canadian election databases use canary traps, intentional errors designed to catch tampering, and they work. The same principle applies to AI coverage: most headlines are intentional errors designed to catch attention, and they work. The money has already moved. The questions are no longer about whether AI works. They are about who owns the upside and how to lock in returns before the next wave of skepticism arrives.
